Happy Halloween and all that stuff

It’s my turn. Yeah, mine. And because I’m a glutton for punishment, I agreed when Faith asked me if I’d like to resurrect this blog. I know I have a few more days. Well, not really. You see, Wednesday, I drive up to my mother’s and come home Thursday. On top of this seven-hour marathon of driving in less than two days with a six year old in tow, I have quarterly reports to finish by the 31st. AND we have our annual Blocktoberfest this Saturday, not mention to Halloween. (I live in insanity central, if any of you are wondering. Grin)

And it’s that time of year again. Candy, candy everywhere. The problem is that I still have to clean my cupboards out from (peering into the cupboard)—gasp—Christmas? There’s candy in there from Christmas? Good God Almighty! That can’t be good. (Scooping out the candy.) And here’s some Easter candy. Hm… do you think that’s still good? Me neither. So, now that the cupboards are finally clean of old candy, I get to stock up on more candy that will soon become old candy, rotting in my cupboards yet again. No, it doesn’t get eaten. My daughter is too picky of an eater for me to let her have more than a few pieces. Besides which, a piece a candy turns my sweet, precious child into Demon Seed. And me? Well, that’s another story. (Can’t turn into something you are already on your way to becoming, right? Just kidding… Right?)

I have nothing against candy. I like candy. And that’s the problem. So I try to make sure I buy candy that I don’t really like. You know, like Almond Joy, jelly beans, Peeps, candy corn, and I bury the candy in the cupboards where it’s such a pain in the ass to pull out that I won’t eat it…unless I’m really, really having a sugar craving. But, in the midst of a homicidal sugar craving, nothing is safe.

But this time I am screwed. You see, one of Charlie’s friends (Charlie’s my husband) kindly sent us an entire box of Wonka chocolate bars for Halloween. An entire box. We are halfway through it. A week or so ago, in one of my PMS moments, I snagged a bar and brought it into the living room where I could eat the entire thing in peace, except I didn’t. Instead, thinking Charlie would say “no,” I stupidly asked if he wanted half. And because he still hasn’t learned that getting between a PMSing woman and her chocolate is about as advisable as getting between a shark and its chum, he said, “Yes.” Lucky for him, I love him and refrained from chewing his arm off…this time. Next time, I’m not promising anything.

Despite the candy, I love this time of year. I love Halloween. (Another excuse to wear a costume. Okay, nowadays, the only excuse I’ve got to wear a costume.) This year, I wanted a new Halloween costume (it’s been a good ten or more years since I’ve gotten one), but leave it to me to check out the parking lot sale on a rainy day. And I happened to pick a place that sold old costumes from TV and film sets. Being a normal size woman, I couldn’t even pull them up past my thighs or over my shoulders. (sigh) So, I’m going to be a witch. Not a sexy witch and not even that much of a stretch, I know, but I already have a black faux velvet dress, a black wig, which I may or may not wear, black boots, and a borrowed witch’s hat. I’ll be a scary witch or a not so scary one, depending on whether I decide to wear make up and how much sleep I’ve had.

So, what do you love about this time of year? And what are you going to be for Halloween? Have you decided? If you come to our block party, I highly recommend that you wear a costume. If you don’t, it’s into the dunk tank for you. Now, that I think about, scratch the costume. Come as you are. (Evil cackle)

Lol - I'm in agreement, Marci, the best part of Halloween are the costumes! First, I decided on a vampire, then I got the vampire teeth, fought with them, decided they were stupid, and now I am going to be a Mortica Addams type of thing. Or a toothless vampire, not sure yet, lol!

I don't really know what I want to be for Halloween. My mom has some costumes up at her house. I'm might pick over her stuff, if she lets me. She had this really great flapper dress. Those are always fun. I have a boa and can do the whole hair thing...if I have time and feel like it. LOL

Morticia Addams sounds like fun. Just be sure to get a guy who will kiss your arm when you speak French. (g)

Me too, I love Halloween. The spooks, haunted houses, costumes, candy, swirling leaves and running through the graveyard with a handsome vampire chasing me. Oops, forgot myself, uh yes your hubby shouldn't eat your candy. :)

Handsome vampire, huh? Who does that handsome vampire look like? What is he wearing? (g)

Oh, and I should have said that I don't really know what I want to be for Halloween, but I am going to be a witch...if nothing else comes up. LOL

Tall, dark and handsome. He was only wearing fangs, good thing it was a warm night. No shrinkage. lol

Nothing wrong with being a witch. There's a little witch in all of us.

We don't go in for Halloween so much where I live in Australia, and I'm a bit jealous. I rather fancy myself in witch's garb.

My kind of vampire. (g)

Ah, now, Maggi, start your own trend. (g) Nothing saying you can't dress up as a witch. (g)

I'm not dressing up for Halloween as I have my grandmother costume on for a bit. I'd like not to take this one off, though I will have to go home eventually and get back to regular Maggie.

Halloween candy is a big temptation for me as well. I alternate between buying stuff I like (in case it all doesn't get given away, it won't go to waste) or buying things I won't eat because God knows I don't need any extra calories at this point, LOL.

This time of year, I love the smell of the outdoors and the look of the leaves changing colors.

Nice (insane) post, Marci. I too love Halloween, candy included. BTW...what's wrong with Almond Joy?
Two years ago I dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow's twin sister. (See, I bet you didn't know he had one) I wore the entire ensemble. Yeah, the folks at work loved that, and I got to walk around with a sword sheaved at my belt. Plastic sword, that is, but I was IN the moment and quite popular, I might add!

Ah, Maggie, that's too bad. I love dressing up. I used to dress up in a scary costume every year, but with a youngster, I can't. (It was very scary. It even made adults jump and scream. BG) When I lived with my parents, I would hide in the bushes and follow the trick or treaters out of the entry way on their way out. One kid once said, "I'm not afraid of you" and stepped forward as if he was going to do something not nice. I didn't say a word, opened my cape and stepped toward him. He ran screaming down the driveway. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Oh, it was funny. I still laugh when I think of it now.

I am so bad. LOL

That's a great costume, Dee! I'd love to walk around with a sword, even a fake one!

A few years ago, I dressed as Annie Oakley. The costume was authentic to what she wore when she performed. Last year, I was a hippie. Or was that the year before? No, I just wore my cape. Not so fun. One year I was a belly dancer. I've also dressed as Lola Montez, a infamous woman from the mid 1800s. (g)

So being a witch isn't nearly as fun, but I'll make it work.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh, I needed this giggle this morning. Great post.

Chocolate. I made myself do housework--HOUSEWORK, can you believe that?--the other night to avoid having any. I slogged through it, telling myself I didn't NEED chocolate.

And then sat down to eat some while watching TV anyway.

I was a witch once. (Still am, except I don't dress up LOL.) Used this "stuff" on my face that created wrinkles. Bugger me, it hurt, and at the end of the night I couldn't get it off. So I went to bed with strips of this stuff on my face, woke up forgetting it was there. Looked in the mirror... I didn't need help in the bathroom THAT day, I can tell you.

TMI. Yep. That's me!

:o)

My biggest laugh was the part where you refrained from chewing Charlie's arm off. Too funny! Why? Because I soooo know what you mean, LMAO!!!

Autumn has always been my fave time of year, even when I was a kid. After I hit about 13 or so, Christmas lost it's sparkle and so did all the other holidays. Now my faves are Halloween, due to the time of year and the spooky atmosphere, and New Year's because it' full of hope and that new slate feeling that a dear friend mentioned earlier today.

Urggg... It's the 27 today. I have not started making halloween costumes yet. I will never getting around to making my own....Not ever...

I really miss not having a little one around at Halloween, and I live in the city now, in a 2storey apt, so no trick or treaters. Soooo in honor of trick or treaters everywhere, I will buy at least three bags of asst chocolate bars, and my two teen daughters will sit down with me to watch a scary movie. We will consume all chocolate. Just doing our part. *wink

HAHAHAHA, Sarah! One year I rinsed my very blond hair black. It was supposed to wash out with shampoo. Uh-huh. I had gray green hair for 3 weeks. Did I mention that I was in the 7th grade at the time? Yeah. Luckily, I was a ballsy little kid. No one said much. (g)

Ah, Faith, I seem to mellow out about chocolate when I'm not PMSing, but, you know, at that time of the month, it's best to back away from me slowly. (g)

Ah, Jamie, just cobble something together and have fun dressing up. This is the one night of the year we get an excuse to wear costumes. Take advantage of it. Let the kids fend for themselves. (g)

That sounds like a perfect plan to me, Adelle. (g)

Husband has spent the past coupla weeks watching all of his old horror movies...I watched Fright Night with him on Saturday...now he's working through all of his Bruce Campbell "Evil Dead" movies. I'm trying to write, so I only pop in occasionally to watch a particularly gruesome spot, just to keep me in the mood! I like to dress up to give out candy, but once I wore a black gown and had a scary mask, and saw teenagers walking up the driveway, so when the doorbell rang, I threw open the door and yelled, "Rowr!" Their little tyke ran screaming back to Mom! I hadn't seen the kid! I tore off my mask and ran after him, apologizing to the parents and offering him the entire bowl! I felt awful!

Honestly my favorite past of the this time of year is the pumpkins and the cool weather...unfortunately we haven't seen alot of the cooler weather yet.

As far as dressing up I have no idea yet I will think of something just minutes before the first trick or treater arrives LOL

Fiona, one of my most favorite parts of October and Halloween are the scary shows they put on satellite. I've caught some old B and W movies this month that I've never seen before, and they've added color to so many of them now so you can see the vibrant color and details of their costumes.

You ladies never fail to leave me laughing! As for the costume part, I always do one of two...either a witch or a gypsy. I do the witch because, well, I'm not far from the part. Most of my clothes are black, I have the cloak, the pentacles, etc. As for the gypsy, I have the layers of skirts, the peasant blouse, and tons of costume jewelry. Plus, with 3 of us in college, and 2 boys under 10, there is no budget for anything else.

Right now I'm into Sweet Tarts. Can't get enough of them. Bought them for Halloween two weeks ago and have had to buy three more bags since. Halloween is Sunday night and the supply I have right now is not going to last. Bummer.

I've got to run to the store today anyway, so I'm just not going to pretend they are for Trick or Treaters anymore and just buy a bag or two or three for my desk. That's it. Just gonna do it. Like Nike.
