Oh, Grandma

By Stephanie Beck

We all have them, those special people who say whatever comes to mind, sans filter. Mine is my grandmother. She is 84 years of awesome. So, she’s a little crazy—always has been—but she loves me.

She shows her love now the same way she has my entire life—with Birthday cards containing $5 that may or may not have my actual age and by attending every single thing she can. Back in the day that meant she made it to volleyball games and award programs at school.

Now it means she comes to my book signings.

This is wonderful and it means so much to me. There’s something special about a grandmother’s pride and I cherish it. But like I said in the beginning, Grandma is a little crazy and retired her filter about ten years ago.

Overheard (by everyone) straight from Grandma:
***
My first signing was at a purse store—a great venue for a girl’s night out.
“Hey, you, that purse doesn’t match your coat. You should come at get a book instead. My granddaughter wrote them and she’ll sign it for you—that makes it worth more.”

My second signing was in my hometown at a candy store hosting a girl’s night out.

“Why do you have so many darn stairs in this place? Mature ladies like me don’t like to climb this many stairs to get books. You should really put Stephanie right out front next to the chocolate with the spices in it—that’s where a smut writer belongs, you know.”

In October I was welcomed back. Grandma couldn’t make it up the stairs, so she sat on a bench near the entrance and...welcomed, sure, welcomed, people. One lady turned up her nose at the idea of reading romance, let alone the saucy stuff I write.

“Old prude. Probably wouldn’t know what to do with herself if she read something sexy anyway.”

My grandma is about sixteen different kinds of awesome and I love her so much. She makes me laugh and cringe—usually at the same time. I hope to have many more book signings with her present. I really can’t picture one without her.

All the best,
Stephanie Beck

When Stephanie Beck’s mother told her to quit whining about less than perfect stories and write her own neither of them could have guessed what would happen. Ten years later that advice has become a fulltime passion and occupation. With a wonderful husband and three beautiful children, the fulltime status makes for very long days, but she breaks up the romance and steamy scenes with knitting, walking, sewing and reading.

What's in Your Browser History?

By Stephanie Beck

I’m all for saving money. Those who know me know that I tend to be a bit of a spendthrift…though some might confuse my ability to squeeze sighs from a penny for being cheap. A few bills in particular always bite me—namely, phone and internet. Both services are super necessary in my personal and business life, but I still groan and growl every time I open the bill.

With my husband working out of town I’ve been faced with even bigger phone bills and another one for him to have internet access at his work. When he signed up and told me about it I admit I wasn’t happy. I asked why he couldn’t just use the internet through work. He said he got it for me.

I was skeptical and called him out on just wanting high speed whatever, instead of using the landline server through his company. After my protests he told me to bring up the search history on my browser. Light bulbs turned on in my head. The business server is monitored and shared…whatever I would happen to look up through it wouldn’t be very private, and well, it probably should be.

My Browser History:

“What things are dehydrating?”
“volumptuous” (because I can never spell it right)
“Popular locations of ghosts.”
“how much arsenic to be fatal to 250 lb man”
“Can ghosts have sex?”
“procedures for removing foreign anal object”
“penalty for theft under 10,000 in Spain”
“best dog breeds for finding buried dead bodies”
“natural body lubricants that taste sweet”
“best sites for free, well, you know”

Upon looking at the history, I understand why my husband would not want his bosses or anyone else at his company to stumble upon it. Actually, looking at it now makes me shake my head, but honestly, every question had a valid reason to be asked!

So, I will pony up for another internet bill and be grateful when I have to schmooze with my husband’s bosses and supervisors at the Christmas party…though really, it probably would have been the IT people giving me looks over their eggnog anyway.

All the best,

Stephanie Beck

Breaking out the Romance: Minnesota Housewife Style

Here in Minnesota, winter is cold! I’m talking below zero temperatures, snow storms, blizzards—the works. Spicing things up when it is so cold can be a challenge, but here are a few of my favorite tips:

The right Pajamas: treat yourself to snuggy pajamas and if they are covered in little bunnies or snowflakes—that is even better. Why? Because in a pinch you can wear a solid pair of snuggy pants and pass them off as ‘work out’ clothes. Once those suckers are covered in big lips or balloons, they are night clothes—aka, sexy. Chilly Trick: trying to match pj’s with your honey takes away some of the sexiness.

Setting the Scene: If your house is as drafty as mine, it doesn’t matter how high you crank the heat—it’s chilly. To combat the cold on a long winter evening of romance, layer blankets on the floor (you may need quite a few), pop in a movie, and make some hot chocolate for you and your honey. Chilly Trick: Sleeping Bags. Zip two together and make a sexy cocoon.

Secret Sexiness: Wearing layers is one way to combat the cold. However, a heavy sweatshirt on top of a turtle neck on top of an undershirt doesn’t exactly scream sexy. For a quiet afternoon at home, lose the bra and let your honey warm his hands in the kitchen while making soup. Chilly Trick: add a jar or two of carrot baby food to your chicken noodle soup to round out the flavor and give it more body—you didn’t expect all these tips to be sexy, did you?

When the winter gets long and hard, hopefully a few of these tips can help get your honeys that way as well.

All the best!
